Last weekend, John Wick 3: Parabellum finally managed to take down Avengers: Endgame for the top spot at the box office, taking in a better than expected $56.8 million. However, Mr. Wick’s reign at the top will be short-lived, as another Disney movie is rolling into town in the form of the live-action Aladdin remake. Also arriving in time for the Memorial Day holiday weekend will be Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut Booksmart and the James Gunn-produced horror-tinged superhero flick Brightburn.
Aladdin, which is the latest in Disney’s line of live-action remakes of animated classics, got off to a rocky start with its marketing campaign. Many were unsure of how to feel, to put it lightly, when it came to Will Smith’s version of the Genie, the role made famous by the late Robin Williams. However, based on early reviews, it seems director Guy Ritchie managed to pull this one out. While it’s not going to be a critical darling, as the movie currently sits at a 60 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, that should be more than enough to help give it a very successful start.
Box Office tracking has the remake taking in between $75 and $85 million. That will easily give it the top spot and that also puts it on track to do at least a little better than Tim Burton’s live-action Dumbo, which hit theaters in March. The cast also includes Mena Massoud as the titular character, alongside Naomi Scott, who plays Princess Jasmine. Luckily for Guy Ritchie, this won’t be another blockbuster bomb. His previous effort, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, ended up losing a lot of money for Warner Bros.

While it will fall from the top spot, John Wick 3 will still enjoy a nice second weekend with between $25 and $35 million. That should easily give it the number two spot. That’s good news for Lionsgate, as they’ve already given the green light to John Wick: Chapter 4. Next up will be a tight race between Avengers: Endgame and Detective Pikachu, which are both expected to come in around the $18 million range, give or take. Avengers: Endgame looks to edge closer and closer to James Cameron’s Avatar to become the highest-grossing movie of all time and every dollar is going to count.
The top five will be rounded out by Booksmart. The critically-heralded female-driven teen comedy currently has an unblemished 100 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and looks to start its run with a solid $12 million debut. Brightburn, meanwhile, will get a jump on the competition on Thursday and could do as much as $12 million over its full four days. But it looks to bring in around $9 million over the weekend. Again, not a bad start for the unconventional superhero movie, which essentially asks the question, what if Superman was evil?
