Sesame Street Movie Is Getting New Bo Burnham Songs

The Sesame Street Movie is going to get some new tunes courtesy of Bo Burnham. The writer, director, actor and musician has been tapped by Warner Bros. to pen new songs for the next big screen installment featuring Big Bird and the gang, which is coming together behind the scenes and, if it stays on track, will hit theaters in early 2021. Anne Hathaway has been tapped to star in the lead role alongside the iconic Jim Henson creations. With Burnham, they’ve just locked in a very key piece of the puzzle and have added one of the truly promising talents in Hollywood currently.

According to a new report, Bo Burnham has locked down a deal to contribute songs for the Sesame Street movie. It isn’t yet clear exactly how many songs he will write, nor is it clear if Burnham will actually appear in the movie himself, though this report doesn’t make it sound like him appearing on screen is part of the deal. Either way, Burnham, who started his career as a music-driven standup comedian, has proven that he can make a major impact behind the camera, and that he knows his way around a fun tune. Though, many of those songs, historically, haven’t been what one would call family friendly. But he can surely tone it down for these beloved Muppets.

Bo Burnham initially got his start in the early days of YouTube. Songs like My Whole Family Thinks I’m Gay caught on and he was eventually signed and that led to multiple comedy albums and stand-up specials, as well as appearances in movies such as Funny People and shows like Parks and Recreation. Judd Apatow served as something of a mentor to Burnham, who eventually started making his own movies. Last year, his feature directorial debut Eighth Grade became an indie sensation and an awards season favorite. He also has a new movie in the works for Paramount that he scripted, which is set to be directed by Amy York Rubin.

The new Sesame Street movie centers on Big Bird and his pals who are forced to leave their neighborhood under mysterious circumstances and, instead, find themselves in New York City. They team up with Sally Hawthorne, a spirited history-show host who is on a quest of her own to save her show and prove that Sesame Street actually exists. On their journey, they will face obstacles created by the evil mayor, with reasons of his own for keeping Sesame Street a secret from the world.

Jonathan Krisel (Portlandia) was tapped in September 2018 to direct the movie, working from a screenplay by Barry Schwartz (Your Family or Mine). A previous draft was penned by Chris Galletta (The Kings of Summer). It isn’t yet clear what other actors will star alongside Anne Hathaway, but Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) is on board as a producer, as are Michael Aguilar, Guymon Casady and Mark Gordon. The Sesame Street movie is currently set to hit theaters on January 15, 2021. This news was first reported by Deadline.
